The base salary will be $63,730 - $90,820 per annum. Starting salary will be aligned with the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications.

About Us

The Office of Indigenous Initiatives (OII) is responsible for championing and/or supporting, through advice and counsel, Indigenous initiatives across a broad range of areas including student affairs, academic programs, workforce planning, space planning, policy and implementation, and training and development, etc. Through collaborative and community-engaged processes, the Office will facilitate partnerships that increase Indigenous voices and presence across all levels of work, study, and research at Western.

The Indigenous Student Centre and the Wampum Learning Lodge are housed under the oversight of the Office of Indigenous Initiatives and provide culturally relevant wholistic and strength-based programs and services geared toward Indigenous students at Western. This position will have a dotted line to the Office of the Registrar to support cross-training on Indigenous recruitment, enrolment, and alignment with institutional goals.

Responsibilities

The Indigenous Recruitment & Retention Coordinator strengthens pathways for Indigenous learners to access, navigate, and succeed in post-secondary education at Western University. The role advances recruitment and retention initiatives through culturally relevant, relationship-based engagement with Indigenous communities and coordinated collaboration across the University. By supporting prospective and current Indigenous students and their families throughout the admissions process, transition to University, and ongoing student journey, the role contributes directly to Western’s commitment to advancing reconciliation and fostering Indigenous student success. The Indigenous Recruitment & Retention Coordinator plays a key role in advancing Indigenous recruitment and engagement across Canada and supports the planning and delivery of orientation and transition initiatives that foster a welcoming and supportive experience for prospective and incoming Indigenous students.

Qualifications

Education

  • Undergraduate Degree in a related field

Experience

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience working with Indigenous youth and Indigenous communities with a focus on education
  • Experience coordinating Indigenous student and/or youth events and programs
  • Experience coordinating and planning large-scale events preferred
  • Experience working in post-secondary education preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough understanding of Indigenous post-secondary student educational needs, policies, issues, and implications in Canada
  • A deep understanding of local Indigenous communities, organizations, and cultural protocols and practices is an asset
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous histories, traditions and cultures
  • Familiarity with social media and technology platforms relevant to engaging Indigenous students
  • Demonstrated ability to use CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce) to support recruitment, relationship management, reporting, and communications
  • Knowledge of post-secondary programs, protocols and processes related to admissions with familiarity with Indigenous Student Services and Indigenous admission practices across the post-secondary sector
  • Presentation skills to deliver engaging and informative presentations that clearly explain information to audiences using appropriate communication channels
  • Ability to understand Indigenous student and community needs and expectations and provide excellent service to directly and indirectly satisfy expectations
  • Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality standards
  • Ability to apply creativity, innovation and resourcefulness to daily work
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the university’s events and activities
  • Ability to listen, inform, explain, and advise students on academic processes and regulations
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to plan and manage events of various sizes; familiarity with large-scale events an asset
